Two men allegedly killed a Hindu family of four in Bangladesh and then reportedly spent the night inside their home, eating dates, taking a bath and consuming yaba – a potent pyschoactive substance – before leaving the next morning, police said.

Police said they showered in the bathroom, ate dates from the dining table and continued consuming yaba after killing the family. Commissioner Mabud said the two suspects had confessed to killing all four family members following their arrest. Family members and neighbours said Ganapati had lived in the house with his family after retiring from Rangpur Zilla School. His sister, Puja Chakraborty, said the family had been unreachable since Thursday night.

Police detained the two men from Dakhiganj cremation ground in Rangpur city. Both are residents of Machuapara, where the killings took place. Rather than fleeing immediately, the suspects allegedly stayed inside the house throughout Thursday night. He later practised as a homeopathic doctor. Despite repeated calls, she could not contact Pritilata or any other family member, while all four phones at the house were switched off.

The killings took place on Thursday night in Machuapara, Kamal Kachna area of Rangpur city, but the bodies were recovered late Saturday night from the family’s locked home.
