A retired Hindu schoolteacher, his wife, and their two children were found dead inside their locked home in Rangpur city, Bangladesh, in circumstances that police say point to murder, with two men subsequently detained in connection with the killings.
The bodies were recovered around 11:30 pm on Saturday from a house in the Daspara (Machhuapara) area of Rangpur, according to Nazmul Kader, officer-in-charge of Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station. Police broke the lock on the house before recovering the bodies.
Family’s reaction
The family had recently built a new house in the Daspara area, where they were living at the time of the deaths. A niece of Ganapati’s said she had also spoken to him on Thursday, before travelling to the house after learning of the deaths on Saturday night.
Arrests and alleged motive
Police, along with the Criminal Investigation Department and Detective Branch, said the investigation is ongoing. Police later detained two men, identified as Mughdho and Siddhartha, in connection with the killings. When his wife came upstairs after hearing the commotion, she was also allegedly strangled. The circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two children have not been detailed by police so far.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said the two had allegedly entered the rooftop of the Chakraborty house from an adjoining building on Thursday night to consume drugs.
