US President Donald Trump on Wednesday suggested the idea of renaming the Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait”, even as the vital waterway remains at the centre of tensions amid the war with Iran.
Escalating Tensions in the Gulf Region
On Tuesday, the US Central Command confirmed that airstrikes targeted Iranian military installations, specifically air defense systems, radar capabilities, and maritime assets. In a related development, Bahrain reported that its air defense systems successfully intercepted multiple Iranian aerial attacks early Wednesday morning, although further details were not disclosed.
In response, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserted that its actions were a form of self-defense against what it characterized as violations of its sovereignty by the United States. This assertion underscores the rising tensions between the two nations.
Additionally, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty engaged in discussions with Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Wednesday, reflecting broader regional diplomatic efforts amidst the escalating conflict.
The two ministers said the continued escalation could have “dire consequences on the region’s security and stability”, according to Egypt’s foreign ministry. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said during a weekly briefing in Islamabad that Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. Pakistan said on Wednesday that it remains engaged with both the US and Iran, with backing from regional countries, in efforts to bring Washington and Tehran back to negotiations.
