The aircraft, developed by US-based Heart Aerospace, flew for 27 minutes without using a single drop of jet fuel. The world’s largest electric aircraft has completed its first test flight in New York, marking a significant step towards the development of battery-powered commercial aviation.
The X1 required only around $5 worth of electricity for the flight, equivalent to approximately Rs 480, according to the analysis. The exact battery weight of the X1 has not been disclosed, but batteries are generally estimated to account for around 40 to 50 per cent of an electric aircraft’s overall weight. The X1 can travel only around 200 km on battery power, making fully electric aircraft unsuitable for international and longer-distance flights with current battery technology.
The successful X1 test flight therefore represents an important milestone, but the transition to widespread electric aviation will depend on advances in battery technology, range, charging infrastructure and the economics of commercial operations.
