Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has made a return to social media after a prolonged absence. On Friday, he posted from his personal account on X, revealing that his account had not been used since 2018, when it was last active for his defense campaign. This marks a significant moment for the controversial figure, who has been largely silent in the public eye for several years.

Assange spent nearly seven years inside Ecuador’s embassy in London after seeking asylum there in 2012. British police arrested him in April 2019 after Ecuador withdrew his asylum . He was sentenced to 62 months in prison, with the sentence treated as time already served. He was released and returned to Australia, arriving in Canberra on June 26, 2024.

He was subsequently held at Belmarsh while fighting the US extradition request.

Assange had become internationally known through WikiLeaks, which published large quantities of classified US military and diplomatic material. His case became a major international dispute involving press freedom, national security and the limits of publishing classified information.
