As the world braces for a record-breaking El Niño, top chefs have been forced to rewrite their menus due to the impact of the erratic weather on food supply.
UN Experts Warn of Strong El Niño Impact on Global Weather Patterns
Experts from the United Nations have forecasted a particularly strong cycle of El Niño for this year. This phenomenon, which originates in the Pacific Ocean and alters wind patterns, allows warm water to flow eastward and releases heat into the atmosphere. The anticipated intensity of this El Niño event raises concerns about an increased likelihood of extreme weather events in 2027.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “El Niño is being supersized before our eyes. The science leaves no room for doubt: the planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up. Sea surface temperatures are rising, temperatures keep climbing, and the world is in the danger zone of extreme weather. The race now is between rising risks and our commitment to take climate action and protect people. We must win that race.”
Additionally, WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo warned, “El Niño has the potential to deliver a massive blow to communities and economies across the world.” These statements underline the critical need for preparedness and climate action as global weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable.
El Niño is expected to intensify into a very strong event in the coming months, according to a statement by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) earlier this month.
