Argentina said Tuesday it had filed a criminal complaint against the Israeli firm Navitas for drilling for oil off the Falkland Islands without its authorization, escalating a new standoff over the disputed territory.
The islands hit headlines again in recent days, after US President Donald Trump threatened to review Washington’s neutrality in the dispute, sending a warning to Britain that was welcomed by Argentine President Javier Milei.
Argentina Takes Legal Action Against Oil Exploration Companies
The Argentine government has filed a criminal complaint against Navitas Petroleum, an Israeli company, for its exploration activities in the Sea Lion project located in the North Malvinas basin. This action was confirmed through a presidential statement.
In addition, legal proceedings have been initiated against Eco Atlantic, a Canadian company with a license to explore adjacent to the Sea Lion field. The Argentine authorities contend that Eco Atlantic’s licenses were issued by what they describe as the “illegitimate government of the United Kingdom.”
Argentina’s legal framework stipulates severe penalties for unauthorized exploration on its continental shelf. According to a law enacted in 2011, violators may face up to 20 years of disqualification from operating in the country and up to 15 years in prison.
The criminal complaint specifically targets shareholders and all levels of management within the companies involved, including directors, trustees, and agents, holding them accountable for participation in the alleged unlawful activities.
