Sources within the Mumbai Indians have revealed that the owners have prepared a 5-man shortlist for the head coach’s role, with the interview process set to begin from Sunday. Among the 5 names shortlisted for the role, there are two Australians, including former Chennai Super Kings batting coach Michael Hussey . As Mahela Jayawardene leaves the Mumbai Indians, the hunt for the franchise’s next head coach has already started.
On Saturday, Mumbai Indians announced that Jayawardene has decided to step down from his role, after about a decade of association with the franchise.
Mark Boucher is also an interesting name, having served as MI head coach in 2023-2024, while also overseeing the 2023 playoff run. However, his tenure was marked by friction within the team, notably during the 2024 captaincy transition to Hardik Pandya, who had replaced Rohit Sharma at the helm. Adrian Birrell is the only one who comes from a non-player background as far as the IPL landscape is concerned. But he is a highly respected technical coach with deep experience across international setups like Ireland and South Africa. He has a proven track record in building structure, discipline, and developing raw talent.
