India’s spin bowling coach, Sairaj Bahutule, confirmed that Shubman Gill’s absence from the first two days of the warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI was a precautionary measure. Gill, who suffered an impact injury to his right ring finger during a practice session on Thursday, has since returned to the field. He opened the batting in the second innings, scoring a fluent 44 runs. Bahutule stated that the right-handed batter is fully fit and prepared for the first Test, which is set to commence in Galle on August 15.
Padikkal’s Performance and India’s WTC Challenge
In a significant performance, left-handed top-order batter Devdutt Padikkal scored an impressive unbeaten 142 in the first innings, bolstering his case for selection in the starting eleven following the exclusion of B Sai Sudharsan, who is sidelined due to a stress reaction in his right big toe. This match is particularly crucial for India, currently positioned fifth on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. As they prepare for a vital series against Sri Lanka, the team aims to improve their standing and enhance their chances of reaching the WTC final.
