Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar scripted history during the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 Plate match against Nagaland in Dimapur on Monday. After being asked to bat first, Mizoram declared their first innings at 581/9 on Day 2, thanks largely to a monumental knock from Sutar, who smashed 400 runs. With the innings, Sutar became only the second batter in Ranji Trophy history to score 400 runs in an innings. The first to achieve the feat was Maharashtra’s BB Nimbalkar, who scored 443* against Pune in 1948.
Chinmay Sutar now holds the second-highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history, behind Nimbalkar’s unbeaten 443. Former India opener Prithvi Shaw occupies the third spot with 379 runs, scored for Mumbai against Assam during the 2022-23 season.

Overall, Sutar became just the 10th player in First-Class cricket history to score 400 in an innings, joining an elite group featuring legends such as Brian Lara , Don Bradman , and several other greats of the game. Lara is on the top of the list with 501* for Warwickshire against Durham.
