India spinner Saransh Jain produced a career-best match haul of 13 wickets to single-handedly dismantle Bihar and power Madhya Pradesh to an innings and 174-run victory in their Ranji Trophy Group A match, which ended inside two days on Tuesday. The 33-year-old off-spinner followed up his devastating first-innings figures of 7 for 14 with a six-wicket haul in the second dig, conceding just 49 runs to finish with match figures of 13 for 89. His previous best figure in first-class cricket was 9 for 71.
India spinner Saransh Jain produced a career-best match haul of 13 wickets to single-handedly dismantle Bihar and power Madhya Pradesh to an innings and 174-run victory in their Ranji Trophy Group A match, which ended inside two days on Tuesday.
Madhya Pradesh had piled up 407 for eight declared in their first innings after resuming the day at 261 for three, with young Saksham Purohit and captain Rajat Patidar holding the fort. Making his Ranji Trophy debut, the 20-year-old Saksham added 19 runs to his overnight score of 113 before being bowled by left-arm spinner Aditya Raj for 132. Patidar, meanwhile, continued his rich vein of form, smashing 109 off just 133 balls, studded with 13 boundaries, before being run out. Bihar’s second innings began on a shaky note as they slipped to 25 for two. Ayush Loharuka offered some resistance with an unbeaten 76 off 66 balls, but there was hardly any support from the other end. Priyanshu scores triple ton In Vadodara, Baroda scored a mammoth 616 against defending champions Jammu & Kashmir in the first innings with 21-year-old Priyanshu Moliya scoring an unbeaten 321 (492 balls) studded with 36 boundaries and a six. Mahesh Pithiya scored 102 to frustrate the opposition bowlers all day. J&K were six without loss from four overs at stumps on day 2. However, it was Priyanshu who continued to chug along for a second full day of play, continuing from the overnight 113 not out and punishing the listless J&K bowlers. Musheer Khan shines for Mumbai Musheer Khan provided two much-needed breakthroughs as Haryana reached 108 for two at stumps on day two in reply to Mumbai’s 430 in their round three Elite Group D Ranji Trophy clash on Tuesday. Musheer (9-3-28-2) accounted for both Haryana openers, skipper Ankit Kumar (35) and Himanshu Rana (27), who put on 61 runs for the first wicket. The visitors were trailing by 322 runs in the first innings at stumps. The opening partnership, however, would not have lasted as long had Divyaansh Saxena held on to a catch offered by Rana at third slip in the fifth over bowled by Tushar Deshpande, when Haryana were 17. At stumps, Dheeru Singh was batting on 23, with Nishant Sindhu on 17 at the other end. Musheer, who had scored 109 on the first day, said he should have gone on to score more. I could have easily scored a 200. Earlier, Kotian’s unbeaten 52 helped Mumbai push their total to 430 after they lost wickets in a heap on the second morning. Kotian scored 52 not out off 96 balls, hitting four fours. Overnight batter Sarfaraz was trapped leg-before by Sindhu for 40 (96 balls, 6 fours), while skipper Siddhesh Lad fell to Haryana pacer Aman Kumar for 33 after the hosts resumed at 290 for three. Samant Jakhar was the pick of the visitors’ bowlers, taking 3/41. In Chennai, Tamil Nadu conceded a first-innings lead of 19 runs but fought back with the ball to reduce Railways to 107 for nine in their second innings, with the visitors leading by 126 runs overall. R Sai Kishore took 4/38, while Jeganathan Hemchudeshan claimed 3/21. Chandigarh piled up a massive 685 for five declared, riding on opener Nehal Pajni’s 222 (349 balls; 24 fours, 2 sixes) and half-centuries from Manan Vohra (61), Arslan Khan (99), Akshit Rana (74) and Bhagmender Lather (50 not out) against Himachal Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh were steady in reply, reaching 49 without loss but still trailing by 636 runs in the first innings. In Dehradun, hosts Uttarakhand conceded a first-innings lead of 78 runs after being bowled out for 194 in reply to Rajasthan’s 272. Rajasthan were 39 for one at stumps, leading by 117 runs overall. Resuming at their overnight score of 10 for one, Karnataka could not quite produce a dominant batting display, reaching 297 for seven at stumps. Aneeshwar Gautam (33) and Manvanth Kumar (6) will look to carry Karnataka’s innings forward on the third day. Karnataka now lead by 103 runs and will look to add a few more to their total on day three to put Tripura under further pressure. For their position of relative comfort, Karnataka should thank veteran batter Karun (63 off 85 balls) and young batters Patil (72 off 130 balls) and KV Aneesh (68 off 142 balls). After the early departure of nightwatchman Vyshak Vijaykumar, Patil and Aneesh added 82 runs for the third wicket as Karnataka made progress. However, Aneesh and Karun quickly dispelled those hopes with a solid 105-run stand for the fourth wicket. The visitors removed Aneesh two runs later as Karnataka slipped to 225 for five. Karnataka were only 28 runs ahead at that stage, and Tripura further troubled the hosts by dismissing skipper Shreyas Gopal and KL Shrijith. However, Gautam managed to add some useful runs towards the end of the day as Karnataka took their first-innings lead past 100. I focus on bowling my stock ball as much as possible,” the left-arm spinner told reporters after stumps on day two. Fifties aren’t good enough,” he said. It was his second successive Ranji Trophy century this season, following his impressive performances for India A in the recent unofficial one-day series against Australia A in Puducherry. Madhya Pradesh declared soon, leaving Jain to resume his assault on Bihar batting line-up. Nine Bihar batters managed only single-digit scores as Jain ran through the line-up to seal a crushing victory for Madhya Pradesh. The touring bowlers looked short of ideas against the young batter, who had scored a century in the previous game. The left-arm spinner bowled with control and aggression, repeatedly creating chances, but had to settle for two wickets in the evening session. After trapping Ankit leg-before, Musheer induced an outside edge off Rana’s bat, which was sharply caught by Sarfaraz Khan at first slip. “I have to play a supporting role to Shams (Mulani) and Tanush (Kotian). I try to bowl in the same areas and stop the flow of runs. “I am happy, but not satisfied. This is our home ground and we know how to bat here. You are recognised as a batter in Mumbai cricket only if you convert your starts into hundreds. But Patil fell to Abhijit Sarkar, and Tripura sensed an opportunity. Tripura then made a fine comeback, dismissing Karun to break the strong alliance.
Meanwhile, former India captain Suryakumar Yadav was also present in the Mumbai dressing room at the BKC Ground on Tuesday. Karun Nair slams fifty for Karnataka Fifties by Karun Nair, Rohan Patil and KV Aneesh helped Karnataka maintain their edge over a fighting Tripura on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match on Tuesday.
