Joseph Vijay’s ruling coalition was officially named the Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance following a coordination meeting at the TVK headquarters in Panaiyur on Wednesday.
The meeting was convened to formalise the organisational structure and floor management of the new ruling alliance. Representatives from major coalition partners attended and endorsed the official name: Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance.
In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, TVK holds 108 seats -10 short of the 118 majority mark. To maintain a stable government, Vijay relies on a network of allies and outside support: In Government / Cabinet: Congress (5 seats), IUML (2 seats), and VCK. Outside Support: CPI(M) (2 seats), CPI (2 seats), and smaller political groups.
However, leaders from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and the Communist Party of India (CPI) skipped the session for the second consecutive time, raising questions about internal coordination. Left party leaders clarified that their absence does not mean an intent to pull down the government. The CPI and CPI(M) have pledged outside support for the five-year term to ensure political stability. This positioning could spark friction with the Congress party, which maintains its own national leadership structure and plans for the next general election.
Because they chose not to take cabinet berths, Left leaders prefer to maintain an independent identity rather than join formal administrative or steering committees, however,. This creates an ongoing tactical challenge for Vijay, who will need to maintain informal channels of communication to ensure their vote when key legislation is introduced.
