OpenAI to sell its top models on Google Cloud's Model Garden: The wider industry impact

OpenAI will make its frontier artificial intelligence models and Codex coding agent available through Google Cloud in the coming weeks, the companies said on Wednesday, deepening ties between two rivals and underscoring how major cloud providers are becoming key distributors of top AI models.

The partnership will bring OpenAI’s latest models such as GPT-6 Astra to Google Cloud’s Model Garden.

It will allow customers to buy them through Google Cloud Marketplace and use existing cloud spending commitments for the purchases, according to a company blog post, as OpenAI tries to sell its models to more enterprise customers. It will also allow customers in regulated industries to access OpenAI models through Google Cloud’s access controls, data governance tools and infrastructure to build so-called agentic AI workflows.

Google has moved to position its cloud unit as a neutral platform offering customers a broader choice of models, after it struck a cloud deal with OpenAI to offer it more computing capacity last year.

Anthropic, an OpenAI rival backed by Amazon and Google, has seen 47% of its 2025 revenue coming from cloud providers Amazon and Google’s cloud platforms, according to its IPO filing reviewed by Reuters.

Thomas Kurian, chief executive of Google Cloud, has told Reuters in a previous interview that the Google cloud platform is an open platform and it welcomes any model popular with developers in it.
