After Zaheer Khan, CSK Eye Surprise England Name For Key Coaching Role

The position was left vacant after Stephen Fleming and the franchise mutually parted ways in July this year, following an 18-year association. Chennai Super Kings are reportedly looking to sign former England off-spinner Gareth Batty as the batting coach ahead of the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The report comes around a month after CSK appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their head coach. Fleming featured as a player in the inaugural IPL season before taking over as the head coach of the side.

The report comes around a month after CSK appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their head coach.

Batty, who played 20 international matches for England, is currently serving as the head coach of Surrey in the County Championship. The IPL 2027 mini-auction will take place in Goa on December 16, with the day-long event scheduled on the same day as the second One-Day International (ODI) between India and Sri Lanka in Bengaluru, according to Cricinfo. The IPL trade window has witnessed two trades since the conclusion of the 2026 season.

With Zaheer now serving in Fleming’s former role at CSK, the franchise is in discussions with Batty for the position of batting coach, according to a report in the Times of India . CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told the publication that an announcement is likely to be made in a couple of days. However, he didn’t mention whether Batty will replace the current batting coach Michael Hussey or assist him. Under his coaching, the club claimed three consecutive titles before finishing as runners-up. In June, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) traded their captain Rishabh Pant to Delhi Capitals (DC) in exchange for wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. More recently, DC traded fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in exchange for uncapped leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari.
