Chahal managed to make it to the T20 World Cup squad the following year after impressing

A regular in both ODIs and T20Is till 2023, Chahal was snubbed from India’s 50-over World Cup squad in 2023, and then did not play a single match in the T20 World Cup 2024. The 36-year-old leg-spinner, who is the highest wicket-taker in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, revealed that Rohit Sharma had clearly told him why he wouldn’t be selected in 2023. Yuzvendra Chahal has dramatically fallen down the pecking order when it comes to the Indian team selection in the last few years.

“In 2023, when I went to play county cricket, Rohit had told me that they wanted batters till No. 8, so they were going with that. Chahal managed to make it to the T20 World Cup squad the following year after impressing for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL 2024, for whom he picked up 18 wickets in 15 games.

After the World Cup, I just stopped thinking about selection,” Chahal revealed, in an interview with former India cricketer Aakash Chopra .

He told me clearly that they were also looking for an extra fast bowler for the World Cup. Rohit had told me that I would play only if a particular combination worked. So at least I had the clarity,” he said.

So it was made clear to me. He praised Rohit for providing him clarity over his role in the squad. “Sometimes you also know the combination may not work. So I did not think a lot. But you always feel that you should have at least played one World Cup game.
