Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is poised to break more records as India take on Afghanistan

“Off to go and try another 100 in Mumbai! Wearing my signed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi shirt for inspiration!” wrote the former England captain in the caption.

“Haha, I’m coming to join you very soon,” wrote the Indian teenager, who has been the talk of the town for his unbelievable batting skill. England legend Kevin Pietersen donned Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Rajasthan Royals jersey and uploaded a picture on social media. His post went viral and reached Sooryavanshi, who came up with a reply.

Sooryavanshi has been a part of India’s T20I squad, but he has failed to find a place in the playing XI against West Indies. Shreyas Iyer and Co. are currently playing a five-match series against the Caribbean side in the shortest format, with Sanju Samson being the preferred opener alongside Abhishek Sharma.

Sooryavanshi has been part of India’s T20I squads from the away series against Ireland onwards, but has played in eight of the 18 matches since then. He made his debut during the second T20I of the five-match series in England as India took the tough call of dropping Samson after only three failures despite his stellar T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. With Sooryavanshi graduating to the senior level after setting the IPL and U19 cricket stages on fire, the Indian T20I team has found itself facing a selection headache over choosing between the fiery teenager and the experienced Samson at the top of the order alongside Abhishek Sharma.
