US Senator Bernie Sanders has urged Donald Trump to go beyond slowing the pace of artificial intelligence development, calling for a pause on advanced AI and a ban on artificial superintelligence.
Sanders Calls for AI Development Pause Amid Growing Concerns
Senator Bernie Sanders has emphasized the urgent need for a pause in advanced AI development, citing the potential risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems. In a recent statement, he remarked, “When the future of humanity is at stake we need a PAUSE on advanced AI development and a ban on artificial superintelligence — an AI mind smarter than any human and capable of operating independently beyond our control.”
Sanders highlighted that leading figures in the tech industry, including Dario Amodei, Elon Musk, and Sam Altman, have acknowledged the necessity to slow down AI development. However, he argued that merely easing the pace is insufficient. “When you are racing towards a cliff, you don’t just ease up on the gas pedal. You hit the brakes,” he stated.
In light of these concerns, Sanders urged for a treaty between former President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to address AI regulation. He believes that such negotiations should occur at their upcoming AI summit to prevent potential crises related to AI advancements.
