Former President Donald Trump is urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to take action against NBC journalist Kristen Welker. This follows Welker’s characterization of Trump’s record in endorsing Republican candidates as having ‘mixed results.’ Trump has labeled her comment as inaccurate and is calling for a ‘rebuke or punishment’ for her remarks.
The controversy erupted after Welker made her statement during a local NBC broadcast prior to the airing of ‘Meet the Press’ on Sunday. In response, NBC News has expressed strong support for Welker, asserting that she is ‘one of the best in the business.’
It is important to note that the FCC typically refrains from intervening in matters concerning news accuracy or editorial decisions, as outlined in its own guidance.
Because someone says it was inaccurate or unfair, the FCC generally does not step in over a news report just.
In a statement to POLITICO, an NBC News spokesperson said, “Kristen is one of the best in the business and we stand by her. Welker did not make the “mixed results” comment during the main “Meet the Press” program. She said it during a live appearance on NBC’s Washington station before the show. Welker said Trump would “loom large” over the races and noted his support for several Republican candidates While discussing the November midterm elections. “He, of course, has endorsed a slate of candidates in the primaries,” Welker said. The FCC can investigate claims of news distortion when there is evidence that a broadcaster deliberately distorted the news, according to CNN.
