Reports on Downdetector showed a spike in complaints, with payment failures making up the majority of reported issues. Clover POS users reported payment disruptions on Sunday.
85% of user complaints were related to payments, while 8% involved funds transfers and 5% involved the Clover app, according to Downdetector. Clover later confirmed that some merchants were experiencing problems with Mastercard and Visa card transactions.
The company said it was investigating the issue and working with the card networks to restore normal processing. “Mastercard and Visa are experiencing an outage that may impact processing for some merchants,” Clover said in a status update . The reports suggested that merchants were primarily facing trouble completing transactions rather than accessing the platform itself.
Clover’s Functionality and Vulnerabilities in Payment Processing
Clover operates as a cloud-based point-of-sale platform, facilitating payment processing, inventory management, and employee operations for various businesses, particularly in the restaurant and retail sectors. Its reliance on card processing makes it a crucial tool for small businesses managing daily transactions.
However, it’s important to note that disruptions within payment networks can impact Clover terminals, even when Clover’s own services are functioning normally. This is due to the dependence on multiple systems for card authorization, highlighting a potential vulnerability in Clover’s operational framework.
