Rishi Kapoor, an Indian-American real estate developer, has been sentenced to 11 years and four months in prison by a US federal court. This ruling stems from a significant real estate fraud case involving nearly $89 million, which is approximately ₹ 745 crore. The court’s decision highlights the serious legal repercussions associated with fraudulent activities in the real estate sector.
Kapoor, 41, admitted guilt to charges concerning money laundering and a conspiracy linked to payroll taxes. He was confronted with a potential maximum sentence of 15 years for those two charges. The court has additionally mandated financial responsibilities, which include restitution to investors, lenders, and government entities impacted by the scheme, Miami Herald reported.
In a letter addressed to the judge prior to his sentencing hearing, Kapoor stated that he “fully accepts responsibility for my crimes without hesitation or excuse.”
Kapoor Expresses Remorse in Court Following Company Collapse
On Thursday afternoon, Kapoor appeared before U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore in Miami federal court. Dressed in a beige jumpsuit and shackled, he maintained a stoic demeanor, displaying a light-gray beard. During his court statement, Kapoor emphasized a renewed commitment to his faith, acknowledging his ‘sins and crimes.’
He expressed deep remorse towards investors, former employees, and his family, reflecting on the emotional and financial toll of his actions. ‘My family lost not only millions of dollars but also the son and brother they believed in and relied on,’ Kapoor stated. He further lamented the impact on his wife, saying she was left with a husband who jeopardized her well-being.
Kapoor admitted, ‘Cumulatively, I have sinned before my God to such an extent that I came to believe my death would be better than my life.’ He conveyed a sense of shame that has burdened him since the collapse of his company in July 2023, stating, ‘I am ashamed of myself, and I have carried that shame every minute of every day.’
