Smith was given out caught behind on 3 after appearing to nick a delivery off Ebadot Hossain . However, Smith signalled for a review even before umpire Kumar Dharmasena could raise his finger. Warner criticised Smith for his reaction, as the veteran batter had seemingly challenged the umpire’s decision before it had even been made.
Smith’s Review Proves Correct Despite Controversy
During Day 3 of the match, Bangladesh appeared to have dismissed Steve Smith, with a loud noise suggesting he had edged the ball. However, Smith confidently requested a Decision Review System (DRS) check before umpire Kumar Dharmasena could signal his dismissal. This reaction drew criticism from his former teammate David Warner, who commented on the broadcast, “I just don’t like the way that Steve’s reacted there. You can’t do that.”
Ultimately, the DRS review vindicated Smith’s decision, revealing that he had not nicked the ball; instead, the noise was caused by his bat making contact with the ground. Despite being proven correct, Warner maintained his disapproval of Smith’s initial response to the out decision, reiterating, “I just don’t think you can do that.”
Smith went on to score 44 runs in the innings, adding to his first innings total of 71 runs. Bangladesh succeeded in dismissing Smith before the close of play, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz taking his wicket.
On that occasion, DRS had again confirmed that there was no bat on ball. It wasn’t the first time in the Test that Smith had been at the centre of a caught-behind dismissal. In the first innings, he had been given not out to a caught-behind appeal, but he later confessed that he felt he’d edged the ball.
