Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, son of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has announced that his visa to the United States has been revoked. In response to this unexpected decision, he has reached out directly to President Donald Trump, seeking clarification regarding the revocation. This development raises questions about the implications of visa policies and accountability in diplomatic relations.
López Beltrán announced the development on Instagram on Thursday, August 13, saying he had received a communication informing him that his US visa had been canceled. Reporting in 2025 noted that US officials had declined to provide reasons for several such visa actions. Because the US government has previously revoked visas belonging to Mexican political figures without publicly explaining the grounds for individual cases, the lack of a stated reason is significant.
That allegation has not been independently confirmed. At this stage, there is no publicly confirmed US government explanation for the cancellation.
In his letter, López Beltrán said Rubio and Landau had ordered the withdrawal of his authorization to enter the United States. He described the decision as political and “propagandistic,” arguing that there was no evidence of an immoral or criminal act against him. He then published a three-page letter addressed to Trump from Teapa, Tabasco. The reason for the visa revocation has not been publicly disclosed by the US government. López Beltrán, however, has offered his own explanation: he claimed the decision was politically motivated and accused Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau of ordering it. López Beltrán asked the president whether he was aware of the visa cancellation and, if he was not, suggested that Trump should consider removing Rubio, Landau and other officials whom he accused of acting against political figures who do not align with their views.
